Fred Leonard Stitzlein was born and raised on his parent's farm northeast
of Greer. On Jan 5, 1896 he married Emma Temple, daughter of James and
Eva Kyser Temple. She was born on the Temple farm, in the Jericho
Schoolhouse community about 5 miles west of Greer in Knox county. She
had two sisters and six brothers. Her parents also took in and raise a
number of orphans on their farm. I am told, or I should say, was told,
that there was practically always some homeless child living with them.
They were members of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church. I remember very
little of Emma, my mother, as I was only four years old when she died.
Fred drove a team for grading when the Walhonding RR was built. It followed the rivers from Loudonville to Coshocton and forstalled the building of a branch of the Ohio Canal from Warsaw to Loudonville. This RR was built to haul coal from the Coshocton, Zanesville and Cambridge Penna RR system. The money he made from this teaming operation enabled him to buy the Alum Rocks Farm, 2.5 miles south of Greer and across the river from Black's RR Crossing. He and Emma set up housekeeping and their three children were born here. On April1, 1905 they moved to Loudonville. They bought a house at 311 No Mt Vernon Ave and a 60 acre farm laying to the west side of Mt Vernon Ave from Deacon Taylor who then owned the Loudonville Milling Co. and advertised Taylor's Peerless Flour. The Loudonville-Perrysville High School is now located on this farm.
Emma died in July of 1909 of a ruptured appendix at age 33. If this illness had occured under today's conditions she would probably have recovered and lived a long life. He married Mathilda M Long, daughter of George M and Mary Kaercher Long, in January, 1911. She was overly strict and too quick to punish. If my two sisters had not been able to protect me at times, life would have been untenable for me at home and I am most grateful for my memories of them. In his earlier days, Fred and George (his brother) helped build quite a few barns in the Greer area. He was a farmer, Loudonville councilman for many years and a church councilman, both at Kaylor Ridge and Zion Lutheran for quite a few years. He and both wives are buried in Loudonville Cemetary.
Fred used to tell a story about when he was courting Emma that he would stay over on Saturday night in the winter. The women would let no one be seated for breakfast until after they had two big stacks of buckwheat pancakes fried. It would then keep two women busy frying cakes until the meal was over.
1900 US Census lists DOB as May 1876... Also lists a border named John Juergens, born May 1879, age 21, born Ohio

Clyde grew up on the family farm about 2 miles north of Greer. He took over the family farm shortly after marriage. This also included the farm that his grandfather, Leonard, had owned. He later added several more farms to his holdings including the farm that his uncle, John Stitzlein, had owned. When they started contour farming they had contour strips over a mile long from the top of Kaylor Ridge, South. They prospered as farmers, raising grain, grass, and beef cattle. They were also fortunate enough to have oil discovered on their land. When Clyde retired from farming their sons, Donald and Conard, took over. Clyde and Fern still maintain their home in one of the farm houses on Ohio 514, N of Greer and have been going to Florida in the wintertime.
SSN: Social Security #: 268-32-4849, OH, issued between 1952 and 1953.
